iOS + iMessage guide

How to make an iOS sticker app for iMessage

Use Apple's Sticker Pack App template in Xcode to turn transparent artwork into a downloadable iMessage app. A basic pack needs no Swift code, but publishing requires a Mac, an Apple Developer account, and an App Store listing.

Follow the Xcode steps

Publishing an app vs making a personal sticker

iPhone can create personal stickers directly from photos. That does not create an App Store product. Use Xcode when you want customers, fans, or employees to download a branded sticker pack under its own name and icon.

What you need

  • A Mac with a current version of Xcode
  • Transparent PNG or APNG sticker artwork
  • A 1024×1024 App Store icon
  • Apple Developer Program membership ($99/year)

Make an iOS Sticker Pack App in five steps

The Xcode template handles the app container and Messages extension. Your work is preparing valid assets, configuring the project, testing the pack, and supplying the store information.

Step 1

Prepare your sticker files

Export transparent PNG files at 300×300, 408×408, or 618×618 pixels. Keep each sticker under 500 KB and use one consistent size across the pack.

Step 2

Create a Sticker Pack App in Xcode

On a Mac, open Xcode and choose File → New → Project → iOS → Sticker Pack App. A basic iMessage sticker pack uses Apple's template and does not require Swift code.

Step 3

Add stickers, icons, and signing

Drag your artwork into Stickers.xcstickers, choose the matching sticker size, add a 1024×1024 app icon, select your developer team, and enable automatic signing.

Step 4

Test the app in Messages

Run the project on an iPhone or simulator. Open Messages, find the app in the app drawer, send several stickers, and check scale, transparency, and animation.

Step 5

Publish through App Store Connect

Archive the project, upload it to App Store Connect, complete the App Store listing and privacy details, add screenshots, and submit the build for review.

iMessage sticker sizes and formats

Small

300×300 px

Medium

408×408 px

Large

618×618 px

PNG is the safest choice for static stickers with transparency. APNG or GIF can be used for animation. Keep files below Apple's 500 KB per-sticker limit and test them at chat size before submitting. Use Apple's Messages documentation as the source of truth when platform requirements change.

Common reasons an iOS sticker app fails

  • Sticker artwork was exported with a white background.
  • The Xcode sticker-size setting does not match the image dimensions.
  • The bundle identifier differs between Xcode and App Store Connect.
  • Distribution signing is missing or uses the wrong developer team.
  • The listing lacks a privacy policy, screenshots, or clear review notes.
